Brett McKinnon
Research Fellow
Dr Brett McKinnon is an IMB Research Fellow at the University of Queensland and holds an adjunct Senior Scientist position with the Department of Gynaecology, Inselspital, Bern. He has a background in clinical and translation research, cell biology and genetics. His research focuses on understanding the contribution of individual cells to disease pathogenesis. He has previous established critical interaction between the endometriosis lesions, immune system and pain.
More recently he has examined these interactions within the context of genetic background using single cell technologies designed to chart the mutational, transcriptomic and proteomic architecture of the endometrium. Using complex cellular models he aims to recapitulate these cellular contributions in vitro to further understand the underlying causes and symptoms of disease and the potential for treatment stratification in both diagnosis and treatment. He works closely with the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital setting up and running clinical research studies designed to facilitate research findings back into clinical practice and improve patient outcomes.
